Family Literacy
Through the creation of the Washington State Adult and Family Literacy State Plan, teachers, administrators, and students identified literacy services for family members as one of the state's two priority areas. To address the literacy needs of family members, the Office of Adult Basic Education has sought to enhance funding and structure programs that build on the best-known practices from state and national research.
In Washington State, family literacy is defined as:
- Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children,
- Training for parents on how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in their education,
- Adult literacy training that leads to improved family management and economic self-sufficiency, and
- Age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.
State Family Literacy funding targets the infusion of quality family literacy activities in the Adult Basic Education system.
Funded programs focus on contextualized learning in which skills building is the means through which content of direct interest to clients is explored and taught. Services for children are carried out with local partners who share a common commitment to child literacy and parental involvement in their child's education.
