Organization of Parent Education Programs (OPEP)


Washington OPEP is…

  • A professional organization of parenting education program administrators and coordinators representing community and technical colleges.

Mission

  • The mission of the Organization of Parent Education Programs in Washington State Community and Technical Colleges is to foster the development of knowledge and skills for strong and healthy families through education and parent involvement.

Parent Education Is…

  • Instruction in the skills of parenting available to the residents of Washington State through community and technical colleges.
  • Participation in a variety of parenting education models. The primary model is the parent cooperative preschool program which offers an opportunity for parents to become directly involved in the education of their children and to be involved in their own education as adults.

Washington OPEP Provides…

  • Communication about Parent Education/Early Learning/ Early Childhood Education/Family Living programs at the colleges statewide.
  • Current information concerning research, curricula, public policy, and staff training.
  • Professional expertise to individuals, organizations, and agencies working with and on behalf of families and children in the state.
  • Professional development for coordinators and program staff.
  • Resource material and program standards for coordinators.
  • Collaboration and co-sponsorship with statewide conferences and workshops.

Parent Education Programs Assume…

  • Parents are the first and most important teachers to their children.
  • All families benefit from education and support.
  • Adults want to practice effective parenting skills.
  • Parents can direct and manage their own learning.
  • Parents, with help and guidance, can locate the information and identify the community resources they need for use in their personal and family’s needs.
