What is the New Faculty Institute?
At first, this annual early fall event, focused on content an instructor might need to know to be successful on the first day, first week, and first year in the classroom. Based on attendee feedback and recent research on the shifting nature of the faculty role, the Institute was redesigned to exposed faculty members to core concepts and principles that will serve them in their development as instructional leaders over the full span of their career.
The Institute curriculum is grounded in competencies selected from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Competencies for Community College Leaders (2nd edition) chosen for their transferability to the faculty role in Washington's community and technical colleges.
The Institute is an orientation to the:
- Roles, responsibilities, and policy focus of the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC).
- System-level structures, processes and operations of shared governance at the state level.
- Washington state economic and student demographic data that determines decision-making at the state and institutional level.
- Complexities of navigating a professional identity as a faculty member at a two-year college
- Scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and cultivating a reflective teaching practice.
Who Should Attend the New Faculty Institute?
The word “new” deptends on context. For the “New” Faculty Institute, the defined audience is faculty members in Washington state who are new to a college, new to the system, or transitioning to a new role (i.e. a tenure-track position, department or committee chair, assessment or faculty development lead, etc.). Faculty who teach academic transfer courses, at this point in their careers, generally have a minimum of three and up to twenty years of documented success in the classroom.
Recently hired faculty with no experience teaching should consider attending Boot Camp, an intensive and hands-on course for professional-technical faculty who have limited or no teaching experience.
How Will Faculty Benefit from this Experience?
In the Washington state community and technical colleges, the majority of the workforce consists of faculty, situating both full-time and adjunct faculty as keepers and drivers of an institutional culture geared towards achieving high and continually improving student success.
While many schools provide professional development opportunities for faculty around teaching and learning and recognize that excellence in teaching can be continually improved through professional learning opportunities, it has become more and more apparent that teaching and on-going disciplinary expertise are not the only responsibilities in which faculty members must engage. Shared governance provides faculty with opportunity to become college and state leaders through formal and informal leadership positions. However, most faculty have no access to professional learning experiences designed to foster their agency and authority as leaders in instructional innovation.
Lunch with Administrators
Faculty attendees frequently identify the tradition of lunch with college presidents, vice presidents of instruction, and deans as an event highlight. This year's Lunch with Administrators will be at noon on Friday, Sept. 4, in the atrium of the McGavick Conference Center. The cost of the lunch for administrators is $20. Checks should be made payable to SBCTC and mailed to SBCTC, PO Box 42495, Olympia WA 98504-2495. Payment cannot be accepted at the Institute.
The registration fee for this event is $125. The fee includes a light breakfast on Day 1, a full breakfast on Day 2, lunch on both days, break refreshments, and Institute materials. Registration deadline for the 2015 Institute is August 25. Checks should be made payable to SBCTC and mailed to SBCTC, PO Box 42495, Olympia WA 98504-2495. Payment cannot be made by credit card nor can it be accepted at the Institute.
Each Washington community and technical college has a primary contact that coordinates new faculty registrations for their campus. Faculty interested in attending the Institute should contact their primary campus contact.
By August 25 the primary contact from each institution will email Jackie Eppler-Clark a list with participant names, college email address, their disciplines, and any special dietary needs.
