Residency Classification

This classification defines residency for current and former active duty military and their spouses and dependents, as well as members of the Washington National Guard and their spouses and dependents.  

Summary

The state of Washington has established definitions for residency to include a student who:

  1. Is active duty military stationed in Washington, including their spouse and dependents; or,
  2. Is a member of the Washington National Guard, including their spouse and dependents (spouses and dependents must reside in Washington state); or,
  3. Is active duty military stationed out-of-state, who entered service as a resident of Washington and has maintained Washington as their domicile, including their spouses or dependents; or,
  4. Is a member of the Washington National Guard stationed out-of-state, who entered service as a resident of Washington, and has maintained Washington as their domicile; or,
  5. Is a former active duty military and separated from the military, under honorable conditions, after at least two years of service and will have enrolled in a college within one year of separation from active duty, including their spouses and dependents, if:
    1. They designated Washington as their intended domicile at the time of separation; or
    2. Has Washington as their official home of record; or
    3. Moves to Washington and establishes a domicile as determined in RCW 28B.15.013.

These residency classifications are mandatory and colleges must charge these students resident tuition rates.

(g) Active Duty Military stationed in WA and Washington National Guard

(h) Active Duty Military or National Guard deployed out of state who enlisted while a resident of WA and maintain domicile in WA

(i) Spouse or Dependent of Active Duty Military deployed out of state who enlisted while a resident of WA and maintain domicile in WA

(j) Spouse or Dependent of Washington National Guard member

(k) Separated from Military with more than two years’ service, honorably discharged, and enrolled within one year of separation

(l) Spouse or Dependents of person separated from Military with more than two years’ service, honorably discharged, and enrolled within one year of separation
