Gender Equity in Athletics

Welcome to the Washington State community and technical colleges Web site on gender equity in athletics. This Web site is designed as a resource for those who have the responsibility to ensure that intercollegiate athletics are equitably provided. It includes important information about state and federal laws, helpful websites and practical tools for evaluating gender equity on campuses.

This site is intended as technical assistance and not legal advice. It was developed with the technical assistance of the US Department of Education, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) and Washington community college athletic directors.

The major sections on this Web site include:

What is Title IX?

  • Federal statutes, regulations, clarifications.

Washington State Gender Equity Regulations

  • State statutes and reporting requirements.

Guide to completing Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) Form

  • Reporting requirement, Federal Web site, helpful Web sites.

Gender Equity Self Evaluation

  • This is a step-by-step assessment process to help a college compare benefits provided to all men’s teams to benefits provided to all women’s teams. Title IX protects opportunities and benefits on the basis of sex so a college needs to ensure that it:
    • Offers male and female students equal opportunities to play sports.
    • Treats male and female athletes equally.
    • Provides male and female athletes their share of athletic scholarships.
  • A self-evaluation guide for complying with Title IX regulations for Washington community colleges.
