High School/College Programs
College in the High School
College in the High School (CHS) programs provide college level academic courses in high schools to serve qualified high school students.
Running Start
Running Start allows 11th and 12th grade students to take college
courses at Washington's 34 community
and technical colleges, Washington State University,
Eastern Washington University, Central Washington University, The Evergreen State
College, and Northwest Indian College
if the institution's governing board decides to participate in the program.
Tech Prep
Washington’s community and technical colleges offer a wide variety of professional-technical training programs.
High School Options
Most Washington State community and technical colleges operate one or more high school programs such as High School Completion, Technical High School, Credit Retrieval, Youth Re-engagement, External Diploma Program or other high school options. The goal of each of these various programs is to award a high school diploma to students who complete the graduation requirements.
High School Completion Programs
HIgh school completion programs are operated under graduation requirements adopted
by the college’s
board of trustees that conform to the State Board of Education’s graduation requirements
as appropriate.
High School Graduation requirements can be found at the State Board of Education website.
Contact Kathe Taylor at kathe.taylor@k12.wa.us at the Washington State Board of Education for policy questions concerning high school graduation requirements.
The High School Completion Listserv is for coordinators and lead program staff of High School Completion programs at colleges around the system.
College-Issued High School Diploma
In 2009, the state Legislature passed Substitute House Bill 1758, which was codified as RCW 28B.50.535, allowing students earning an associate degree from a community or technical college to receive a high school diploma, upon written request, even if they have not otherwise met the high school graduation requirements (credits, state assessments, high school and beyond plan, and culminating project).
