Koenninger re-elected chairman of state community and technical college board
Tom Koenninger of Vancouver, Wash., has been elected to a second consecutive term as chairman of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, which governs the state system of 34 two-year colleges.
Gov. Gary Locke appointed Koenninger to a four-year term on the State Board in 1999. He served as the board’s chairman in 2001-02 and was recently re-elected for 2002-03. A longtime newspaper editor, Koenninger retired as editor of The Columbian in 2001. As editor emeritus, he writes a weekly column for the newspaper, serves on the editorial board and works with The Columbian Advisory Council.
He has long been active in community affairs in the Vancouver area. His extensive list of community involvements includes serving on Vancouver’s Celebrate Freedom Committee, the Conservation Land Trust Advisory Board, the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust Board and Long Range Committee, Clark College Alumni Association board of directors, “Festival 150” Planning Committee, and the Lewis and Clark Commemorative Committee.
The State Board is a nine-member volunteer board of citizens appointed by the governor to oversee the community and technical college system in Washington state. The system served more than 250,000 individuals statewide during fall 2001 in academic transfer, workforce training and basic skills education.
In addition to Koenninger, the State Board members are Bob Bavasi, Everett; Paul Hutton, Issaquah; Dr. Mark Kondo, Spokane; Al Link, Silverdale; Erin Mundinger, Omak; Jane Nishita, Seattle; Carolyn Purnell, Seattle; and José Ruiz, Mount Vernon.
