Community and technical college board meets Wednesday, March 12, in Olympia
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.
Board members will hear a preliminary report on the impact of the 2002-03 tuition increase and a change in the community college tuition structure. While tuition was increased by an average of 12 percent, the board also added a small charge for each credit between 10 and 18 credits. Previously students paid a flat rate for all credits between 10 and 18.
As part of the analysis of the impact of tuition changes, representatives from the colleges and the state board staff have been studying the student population, including income levels; enrollment patterns, such as the number of credits taken; college tuition revenues; and financial aid, including the percentage of eligible students receiving assistance.
The agenda also includes a discussion of enrollment demand at community and technical colleges and the implications of enrolling more students than the state provides funding to support. The colleges are faced with unprecedented demand and the desire to provide students with access to higher education at the same time budgets are being cut.
The meeting will be in Room 200-A of Building 22 at South Puget Sound Community College, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia.
