Community and technical college board to approve the budget and vote on tuition increases
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will approve the college system’s budget for next fiscal year and vote on tuition increases when it meets next Wednesday and Thursday, May 4-5 at Pierce College Puyallup.
Now that the Legislature has completed its work, the State Board is scheduled to review and approve the allocation of funds to the state’s 30 community and technical college districts for fiscal year 2006, which starts July 1. The allocation will include the districts’ current budget allocation as well as changes based on legislative action, including money for employee salary increases and 4,185 new student enrollments.
The budget approved by the Legislature last week provides the State Board with the authority to increase resident tuition by 5 percent. The Board will vote on resident and non-resident tuition that will be effective fall quarter 2005.
The Legislature has provided two-year colleges with a budget that will meet our goals of increasing access and providing employee compensation,” said Earl Hale, the State Board’s executive director. “Passing that money on to the colleges will be a significant action for the State Board.”
On Thursday, the State Board will receive an update regarding the baccalaureate capacity issue, including the creation of a task force to determine the selection process for applied baccalaureate degrees at a community or technical college, and contracts with universities to offer bachelor’s degrees at two-year colleges.
The State Board will also hear a presentation about revisions to the State Board’s TIAA-CREF retirement plan, and review the Board’s bylaws subcommittee report.
In addition to the action taken on the budget allocations and tuition increases, the State Board will take action on the Department of Information Services/K-20 contract and a few resolutions of appreciation.
The board will meet in a study session Wednesday from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. and conduct regular business Thursday from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m. Both sessions will take place in the College Center Building, Multipurpose Room A at Pierce College Puyallup, 1601-39th Ave SE, Puyallup. The board has also scheduled a dinner meeting Wednesday with trustees and administrators of Pierce College. All meetings are open to the public.
