Community and technical college board to consider adult basic education plan and workforce education awards
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will take action on a series of policy and budget items when it meets next Wednesday and Thursday, June 22-23 at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.
The State Board will consider the adult basic education state plan, which addresses the future needs of adult literacy and identifies ways to measure success. Awards and allocations of adult basic education funding will also be approved to provide community and technical colleges and community-based organizations with money to run adult literacy programs.
The State Board will allocate money to two-year colleges for workforce education, which includes a variety of programs such as worker retraining, apprenticeships and a combination of adult literacy and job training.
“Adult literacy and workforce training are the core of two-year colleges,” said Earl Hale, the State Board’s executive director. “The State Board’s actions on adult literacy and workforce education will allow our system to make even more progress in creating opportunities for families to earn livable wage jobs.”
The State Board will also hear about the Bridges to Opportunity Project, an effort led by the Ford Foundation and two-year colleges in six states, including Washington, to identify ways to increase access to higher education for low-income people.
Budget allocations for minor construction projects at two-year colleges across the state will be approved by the State Board. The projects include minor works, repairs, renovations, replacements, matching fund and growth projects, and maintenance and operations.
The State Board will also review proposals for consultant finalists for the executive director search process. Executive Director Earl Hale announced his retirement, effective December 30.
The board will meet in a study session Wednesday from 1:30 to 5:15 p.m. and conduct regular business Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Both sessions will take place in the Grant County ATEC Building at Big Bend Community College, 7662 Chanute Street, Moses Lake. The board has also scheduled a dinner meeting Wednesday with trustees and administrators of Big Bend Community College. All meetings are open to the public.
