Community and technical college board to look to the future

OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on May 3 and 4 to look to the future at new programs being launched, the landscape of Washington Learns, the next budget request and strategic directions for two-year colleges.

“This two-day meeting will give the State Board the opportunity to plan for the future, and help position community and technical colleges to serve the upcoming needs of Washington’s residents and the state,” Executive Director Charlie Earl said.

At its study session on May 3, the board will evaluate the effectiveness of students’ transferability between community and technical colleges, consider an operating fee waiver for student athletes, review three new programs coming online, and discuss future strategic directions.

At its regular meeting on May 4, the board will hear a presentation from the host, Olympic College, preview adult basic education awards and allocations, discuss potential budget request for the 2007-09 biennium, and receive information about WorkFirst and professional technical faculty certification. Denny Heck, chair of the Washington Learns Higher Education Advisory Committee will discuss the work of Washington Learns and engage with the board about the role of two-year colleges.

The board’s study session is scheduled from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on May 3. The regular meeting is scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on May 4. Both meetings will take place at the Olympic College Poulsbo Campus, Seminar Room 221, 1000 Olympic College Place NW, Poulsbo. From 6 to 8 p.m. on May 3, the board will have dinner with the executive director at the Bayside Broiler, 18770 Front Street, Poulsbo. There will be no resulting action.
