Community and technical college board to track enrollment, operating funds and legislative actions
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on January 31 and February 1 to engage in discussions about enrollment trends, operating fund allocations to colleges and bills being considered by the Legislature.
The Board will hear remarks from Rep. Deb Wallace, D-Vancouver, who is the chair of the House Higher Education Committee, on Thursday.
“The timing of the State Board meeting coincides nicely with the legislative session,” Executive Director Charlie Earl said. “The Board will receive up-to-the-minute reports on legislative activities and the ways bills under consideration might affect community and technical colleges.”
The work session on January 31 will include an update on three new task forces formed by the Board to further student achievement incentives for colleges, technology initiatives and listening to students’ needs. State Board staff members will give presentations on fall enrollment statistics and the methodology that determines how operating dollars are allocated to two-year colleges.
During the regular meeting on February 1, the State Board will consider a property acquisition at Lower Columbia College, an enhancement of Tacoma Community College’s main campus entrance, and a contract to hire a company to support Transition Math Project efforts. The Board will also consider adopting the criteria that will be used to prioritize the capital budget request for the 2009-2011 biennium.
The Board will tour the new SBCTC office and have a reception with the staff from 1 to 2 p.m. on January 31. The study session is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. The regular meeting is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on February 1. All public meetings will take place at the State Board for Community and Technical College office, Cascades Conference Rooms, 1300 Quince St. SE, Olympia. From 6 to 8 p.m. on January 31, the Board may meet for dinner at Mercato’s Restaurant, 111 Market St. NE, Olympia. Plans are still tentative. A final notification will be sent next week. There will be no resulting action. All meetings are open to the public.
