Community and technical college board prepares for next legislative session

OLYMPIA –The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on October 17 and 18 at Lower Columbia College in Longview to approve budget priorities for the upcoming legislative session and to weigh in on the master plan for the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

“The Board will spend valuable time looking at the future needs of higher education and seeking ways to serve more Washingtonians,” Executive Director Charlie Earl said.

The Board will approve the 2008 supplemental budget request to the governor and consider endorsing legislation to continue the expansion of the state’s bonding capacity for new buildings on college campuses.

Ann Daley, executive director of the Higher Education Coordinating Board, will meet with the State Board on the second day to gather input for the HECB’s strategic master plan, which sets a vision for higher education across the state.

The Board will discuss the work of a two-year college system taskforce reviewing the scope and degrees offered by technical colleges, of which there are five in the system. They will hear reports from the technology transformation and student listening taskforce and discuss the State Board office budget. As the host college, Lower Columbia College will make a presentation to the Board.

The Board will consider taking action to award Transition Math Project funds to the University of Washington and change a voluntary retirement savings plan.

The study session is scheduled on October 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. and the regular meeting will be held on October 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All meetings will take place at Lower Columbia College, 1600 Maple, Longview in the Administration Board Room. The Board will meet for dinner with the State Board staff at 5:30 p.m. on October 17 at the Monticello Hotel and Restaurant at 1405 17th Ave., Longview. No official business will be discussed. All meetings are open to the public.
