SBCTC Employee Resource Groups

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary associations of SBCTC employees who gather together around a shared identity/characteristic or common interest. The groups provide safe, informal spaces for employees with shared identities or common interests to gather and build community. They also provide forums for employees to gather and share ideas about matters that affect their professional development and work at SBCTC.

Black Diaspora at SBCTC

The Black Diaspora at SBCTC Employee Resource Group will provide a space for Black and African-American identified staff to convene, connect, and network. Moreover, this space will provide opportunity for community building across divisions and surface the needs, interests, concerns, and accomplishments of Black and African-American employees at SBCTC.

The shared characteristic for this group is race, membership is welcome for all Black and African-American identified staff at the agency.

Starting an Employee Resource Group

Fill out the Employee Resource Group Application. Information you'll need to fill out the application include: 

  1. Identify a lead or co-leads of the group, along with the contact information for those who may want to join the group.
  2. Put together a Group Information Statement for the group. 
  3. Put together Goals for the group (optional). 

Once you've submitted your application:

The SBCTC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and HR Office will review your application and respond to the email addresses included in your application with any questions we may have. The DEI Committee reviews ERG applications on the third Wednesday of every month. You can expect to hear from the DEI committee regarding the status of your group's application 30 days after the next DEI meeting.

After the application is reviewed by the DEI Committee, and Human Resources ensures the group is in full compliance with SBCTC policies and provides approval, the DEI Committee will be in touch to welcome your group as an Employee Resource Group, bound by the SBCTC policies and use of SBCTC resources listed in the Employee Resource Group Policy. Resources for Starting an ERG

The SBCTC DEI Committee hosted an event announcing Employee Resource Groups to agency employees on October 23, 2020. The event was recorded and the recording is available below. The recording provides information on what Employee Resource Groups are as well as how to start one. Additionally, the event showcases six panelists from Washington community and technical colleges as well as Washington State Business Resource Groups providing context on why this type of group is important.

All are welcome to consider SBCTC's new Employee Resource Groups policy and how it may inspire policies at other agencies, colleges, and more. SBCTC employees are encouraged to view the recording and consider starting an ERG at SBCTC.
