Update on Student Association agenda as Legislature reaches Floor Cutoff

As the quarter has come to a close, the State Board said goodbye to Brenda Portaro, the legislative intern from South Puget Sound Community College. During this session, she has participated in multiple advocacy days on the Hill, testified on bills that benefit immigrant students in the community and technical college system, and has met with legislators to advocate for the Washington State Community and Technical College Student Association and SBCTC legislative agendas. >>

College system-requested bills passed, others up for hearings as policy committees reach cutoff

Today marks the first cutoff of the 2017 session: bills in policy committees must be approved by that committee in order to continue on in the legislative process. The House version of the leasehold excise tax exemption bill was up for a hearing while the House version of the corrections education bill was heard before the House Appropriations Committee. >>

System-request, opportunity scholarship expansion bills heard as committee hearings continue

Policy committee hearings continued this week as Senators took up community and technical college system-requested bills on corrections education and the Customized Training Program. The House versions of the bills were heard in the House Higher Education Committee on Jan. 17. Bills on the Opportunity Scholarship and a workforce study also received hearings. Meanwhile, work sessions were held on textbook costs and on teaching requirements for faculty. >>

Corrections education, Customized Training Program bills earn approval

January 29, 2017

Two community and technical college system-request bills — allowing colleges to offer degree programs in prisons and making the Customized Training Program permanent — won approval from the House Higher Education Committee this week. House members also heard proposals on faculty hiring and pay while Senate budget-writers learned about higher education funding. >>
