Forums begin for Peninsula College president finalists
Multiple opportunities to interview the four finalists for the Peninsula College president’s post extend from today through April 19. ... Each forum will feature
a brief introduction of each candidate, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Those participating in the candidate forums will be asked to provide feedback via
an online survey.

degree and certification programs. “This is a service we’re providing for colleges,”

South Puget Sound Community College offers unique craft beverage degree
A rise in craft breweries and distilleries prompted South Puget Sound Community College to offer a unique degree. While some schools offer degrees in brewing or distilling,
a school spokesperson said the Tumwater-based college is the only college offering
two-year associate degrees in craft brewing, distilling, and cider-making.

Wenatchee Valley College to hold in-person graduation ceremonies
Graduation at Wenatchee Valley College will look, well, like normal graduation this year. For the first time in three years,
WVC will host in-person graduation ceremonies for both campuses this June. The ceremony
for the Wenatchee campus will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, in the Apple Bowl.

The Columbia Basin College planetarium in Pasco is reopening to the public after being closed to most events
for more than two years. “We are readier than ever to once again be able to teach,
engage and captivate our visitors of all ages, and to help inspire a new generation
of students to look up,” said Erin Steinert, director of the planetarium and observatory.

Ending unpaid internships
Internships tend to advantage students who are already advantaged—essentially those
who can afford to work for cheap or free .... Initially community colleges led the
fight against unpaid internships, since those institutions already had more lower-income
students, but in recent years more R-1 institutions have joined in, said Hora.

Students of color less likely to get mental health treatment
While mental health worsened among all student groups during the COVID-19 pandemic,
students of color were particularly vulnerable, according to a new study that documents
inequalities in mental health care between 2013 and 2021. The study, published by
the Journal of Affective Disorders, found that in 2020–21, more than 60 percent of
students met the criteria for one or more mental health problems—a nearly 50 percent
increase from 2013.

WATCH LIVE: How student loan debt disproportionately hurts Black borrowers
Americans, in total, owe nearly $1.75 billion in student loan debt, with more than
44 million people owing, according to a 2020 NAACP report. ... Though President Joe
Biden announced on April 6 that he will again extend relief for federal borrowers,
pushing the payment start date back to Sept. 1, his administration hasn’t yet taken
any substantial steps toward permanent relief.
