Open Prison Education (OPE)

The Open Prison Education project was started to bring equitable access to learning technologies to corrections environments. Specifically, we help support higher learning with self-hosted canvas servers, supporting tools for offline/secure instruction, and secure laptops that incarcerated students can use in their housing units. This technology has massively increased student access to education.

The OPE project consists of the following components:

  • Self-Hosted Prison Ready Canvas learning management system.
  • Conversion tools – to modify curriculum to work in secure or offline environments.
  • Media tools – ability to easily import media for offline use.
  • Easy install – pre-built applications that can be deployed and updated via a USB drive even without internet.
  • Laptop Security and synchronization – Incarcerated students can download schoolwork from Canvas and then take it to their housing units to continue to learn.
  • Open Source – The entire system is open source so that others may benefit or contribute. 6+ states have used the system to deliver corrections education.
