House operating budget and higher education funding plan released, along with House and Senate capital budget proposals

The House released its version of the operating and capital budgets Monday, hearing the operating budget Monday and the capital budget Tuesday. The Senate introduced its version of the capital budget Wednesday with a hearing that afternoon. Senators also released their operating budget at noon today. With analysis still in progress and a hearing scheduled for Monday's Senate Ways and Means Committee, that proposal will be covered in next week's Legislative News. >>

Finding my voice in the legislative process

From a student’s perspective, legislative advocacy can seem like an activity reserved for prestigious people with suits and ties. By believing this, finding belonging in the legislative process seemed unreachable for me. Through working with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) this legislative session, I discovered purpose behind projecting my voice to the Legislature, motivating me to encourage Washington students to do the same. >>

Policy committees wrap up first full week of hearings back from floor cutoff

House and Senate policy committees wrapped up their first full week back following the March 20 floor cutoff, hearing bills from the opposite chamber. Community and technical college system representatives were on the hill testifying on the Career Connect Washington and the Washington College Promise Scholarship bills. Also up for a hearing was a bill that would create a summer Running Start pilot program and a bill that would create a scholarship program for eligible College in the High School and Running Start students. >>
