Hearings resume as Legislature passes House of Origin cutoff Wednesday

The House and Senate wrapped up voting bills out of their originating chamber Wednesday ahead of the House of Origin cutoff. Bills, unless necessary to implement the budget, need to be voted out of the House or Senate in order to continue in the legislative process. Committee hearings resumed Thursday with the Senate Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee taking up the community and technical college system's requested bill HB 1714, which would grant a high school diploma to students over the age of 16 who complete an associate degree. >>

Fiscal committees wrap up work as Legislature reaches its second cutoff

House and Senate fiscal committees held marathon hearings this week, hearing and voting on bills before the fiscal committee cutoff today. Today's cutoff means that bills with financial impact need to be voted out of those committees in order to continue in the legislative process. Testimony is encouraged to be short and focuses on a bill's fiscal significance, not policy. >>

House and Senate committees entered their fourth week of hearings this week, taking up bills on low-cost course materials, scholarship and tuition waivers, and students experiencing homelessness. The House College and Workforce Development Committee at its hearing Wednesday held a work session on community and technical college faculty composition, while the Senate Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee at its hearing Thursday hosted a work session on how trades professions help meet the state's workforce demands in high-demand fields. >>

Every week the internship experience gets better because there are new prospects and exciting events I get to witness. I cherish and appreciate the moments at House College and Workforce Development Committee hearings. I appreciate them for the fact that I get to start off the day strong with hearing bills that are going to affect the future of my education and that of my fellow students. And I love that I get to be present at them and occasionally testify. My day starts off full of promise of productivity. >>
