Summarizing my SBCTC legislative internship

In December of 2020, I was notified that I had been selected to serve as one of two legislative interns for the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) and my internship would begin in January of 2021. Initially, I was very excited for the opportunity, but I was intimidated because I had little experience with the legislative process prior to my internship. While that experience was limited, I had plenty of experience interacting with and advocating for my fellow students in community and technical colleges. >>

From here to now

With just weeks before of the end of my 2021 legislative session internship, I continue to be filled with appreciation for the opportunity to advocate on behalf of Washington college students. Over the three months I’ve been with the State Board, Sydney and I have been introduced to amazing people who are so passionate about making the road to higher education as accessible as possible for all students in Washington state. >>

Tips for testifying

March 26, 2021

On March 31 at 1:30 p.m., I will be testifying once more on HB 1016 in hopes of making Juneteenth a statewide holiday. Throughout this journey, I have been grateful to be given advice from those within the State Board on how to truly advocate on behalf of others. With just 30 days left in the 2021 legislative session, I would like to take this opportunity to give advice to those who have not yet the opportunity to advocate and testify on bills during this legislative session. >>

Testifying twice in support of HB 1166

Committee hearings resume as Legislature passes floor cutoff deadline

March 12, 2021

Tuesday marked the House of Origin cutoff, the deadline when bills that started in the House or Senate needed to be voted on by members of the entire chamber. Bills that did not receive a vote or failed to pass, unless a necessary part of the budget, will not move on in the legislative process for the 2021 session. >>
