Opinion: Rufus Woods: WVC student learned great lessons building Spirit of America website
When college academics are balanced with relevant practical experience, students seem
to flourish. That certainly was the case for Wenatchee Valley College students like Nicole Warren who teamed up to develop a marketing plan and powerful
new website for the local 9/11 Spirit of America Memorial Committee.

Sunnyside student wins $10,000 scholarship for duct tape prom dress
Larissa Leon, a Sunnyside student who created a colorful Folklorico flower gown out
of duct tape, won the top prize in a $10,000 national scholarship contest. ... She
plans to use the $10,000 for her education and get closer to her dream of becoming
a dermatologist. She will graduate from Sunnyside High School in 2022 with an associate
in arts degree from Yakima Valley College’s Running Start program.

North Spokane Corridor beings to take shape on Spokane Community College campus
... According to WSDOT East, work started on the first project south of the Spokane
River in the Spokane Community College parking lot on July 13. The first concrete will be poured for the footings of the
substructure for the future North Spokane Corridor sometime in late July.
Its a welcome sight for local commuters.

Big Bend Community College participates in law enforcement drone training
Big Bend Community College program, Unmanned Aircraft Systems department, worked alongside local law enforcement
for drone training. The Moses Lake Police Department, Othello Police Department, Quincy
Police Department, Soap Lake Police, Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and the Central
Washing University Police had officers participate over the weekend.

Clark College will not require COVID-19 vaccinations this fall
Clark College said Tuesday that it will not require COVID-19 vaccinations this fall. The announcement
from the Vancouver-based college follows many other community colleges in the region
that have made the same call, such as Portland Community College. Clark announced
it will be requiring everyone on campus to continue wearing face coverings for the
time being.

Baccalaureates at community colleges are making a difference
... Twenty-four states now have legislation that allows community colleges to offer
baccalaureate degrees, according to Angela M. Kersenbrock, president of the Community
College Baccalaureate Association, which promotes access to community college bachelor’s
degrees as a way to close racial, ethnic and economic gaps.

NASFAA creates toolkit to reduce implicit bias in financial aid policies
... To mitigate the negative impact of implicit bias, specifically in college financial
aid offices, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA)
published the “Implicit Bias Toolkit.” The toolkit offers best practices to financial
aid administrators to address biases in policies related to institutional forms, communication,
cost of attendance, scholarships, student worker programs, verification and professional
judgment.
