Wenatchee Valley College building dedicated to Gloria Atkins, Colville tribal elder also known as Mish ee twie

When the newest building at Wenatchee Valley College was officially dedicated Tuesday to Gloria Atkins, also known as Mish ee twie, her family was there, so proud and honored. The new building is named Mish ee twie in honor of Atkins, a higher education advocate, tribal elder and proponent of tribal fishing rights at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Icicle rivers.

Mentorship program supporting Black male students at Seattle colleges to expand

A pilot program that aims to help increase the number of Black male students staying in school and graduating from Seattle Central College is getting ready to expand. The program is called Springboard8, which is a partnership between Central and consulting company Slalom. Slalom has made a three-year financial investment to the program and there is now work underway to include Springboard cohorts at Central’s sister colleges, North Seattle College and South Seattle College.

A life of service: Remembering Paul Hirai

According to former Big Bend Community College President Terrence Leas, Paul Hirai epitomized the Rotary Club motto “Service above self.” “Paul was such an important contributor to making the community better,” Leas said of Hirai, who died on Aug. 31 at the age of 92. “I can only aspire to do as well with my life.” “We really lost a great one,” Leas added.

HomeStreet Bank recently donated $5,000 to Edmonds College’s Project Home Association (PHA), which provides rental and hotel assistance to students facing homelessness. The donation marks 12 years of support from HomeStreet Bank.

Olympic College requires vaccination for students attending class in-person this fall

Olympic College will require students attending classes on all three of its campuses to be vaccinated for COVID-19 this fall, and those attending have until Sept. 24 to get their first dose.  Students attending class at the college's campuses in Bremerton, Shelton and Poulsbo are required to receive at least one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine by Sept. 24 and must be fully vaccinated by Nov. 5.
