College Spark grant aims to move low-income students past remediation, into college-level courses

High school graduates will have another way of getting placed into college-level classes and possibly avoid remediation thanks to an effort funded by College Spark Washington. The organization has awarded a $150,000 grant to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to help three community colleges – Bellevue, Big Bend, and Peninsula – use transcripts to place students into the appropriate level of math and English classes rather than relying on placement tests alone. >>

Community and technical college board to weigh capital budget priorities, student success initiatives

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will convene its regular business meeting in Pasco Thursday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. The board will act on a resolution establishing system priorities for the 2015-2017 capital budget request, which will be submitted to the Office of Financial Management for consideration by the Governor and the Legislature. >>

Community and technical colleges and four-year universities join forces to advance nursing profession

In a move to boost the number of nurses with bachelor’s degrees in Washington, the community and technical college system and four-year universities have reached a landmark agreement to create a shorter, smoother process for students to achieve the degree. A new statewide Associate in Nursing transfer agreement standardizes the way credits are awarded and accepted between and among Washington’s community and technical colleges and four-year universities. >>
