How to Use the User Productivity Kit (UPK)

Introduction

ctcLink PeopleSoft web-based interactive training courseware uses Oracle's  User Productivity Kit (UPK). The UPK interface is highly intuitive, but before you click into your UPK pillar training, please read below for helpful pointers and user tips about navigation, player modes and more.

Hint: You might want to print the UPK Helper Quick Reference and have it on hand for your first UPK experience.

Technical requirements

Before you begin using UPK, review the Technical Requirements.

Getting Started with the UPKs

Each of the three pillars has its own online UPK training. When you click any link to UPK content, a new browser window will open. (That's why you need to turn off your popup blockers.)

The new window will show all of the UPK content available for a specific pillar. When you have finished reviewing the UPK, simply close the browser window.  Your original window will still be open.

Once you have a basic understanding of how to work with the UPK, start with the Fundamentals Course for your pillar (Campus Solutions, Human Capital Management or Finance). If you aren't sure which Fundamentals Course is for you, start with HCM.

Basic Navigation

When you open UPK training materials, you will see two distinct sections:

  • Outline section on the left hand side of the page
  • Content window on the right hand side of the page

The outline section contains a number of expandable elements or subjects. The elements are represented by a plus sign and a closed book ("expand" icons). Clicking either will open the book and expand to show more content.

The book icon is used to create an outline structure. When you select the book icon, it will display the items within, as well as important high-level information in the content window on the right.

The interactive content is found at the topic level. Topics are represented in the outline by file folder icons.

Player Modes

When you select (single click) a topic, you will see a description of the topic in the content window. After reading the basic description of the topic on the right hand side of the screen, various buttons may appear above the description known as Player Modes. These modes allow you to view or try different tasks associated with the topic presented.

Try It! or Print It!

  • Try It! mode lets you try the selected task in a simulated environment. The UPK will give instructions to complete a given task. Try It! gives  the options to return to previous slides, restart and display concepts. Try It! requires the learner to advance manually through the slides.
  • Print It! mode lets you print a copy of the UPK lesson.

Mode Navigation

Try It! mode is the most common way you will interact with the UPK. In this mode, a yellow bubble will present information and guide your navigation.

Yellow bubble

After clicking on the Try It! player mode, a yellow bubble will appear on the screen, guiding you through each step of the task.

Even More Help

Lost in the UPK? Unsure what to do next?

Help resources are located in the UPK player itself. There are two ways to find the Help menu in UPK:

  • Click the question mark in upper right hand corner.
  • Within any yellow dialog bubble, Help is one of the options.
