What is Title IX?

Title IX in Educational Programs

Title IX is a federal civil rights statute that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funds. It is part of the 1972 Education Amendments. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) within the U.S. Department of Education is responsible for enforcing Title IX. Since our colleges receive federal funds, the athletic program falls under Title IX regulations.

In 1979, OCR issued “A Policy Interpretation: Title IX and Intercollegiate Athletics” to clarify the Title IX requirements for athletic programs.

OCR also issued the following athletic policy document: "Clarification of Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Guidance: The Three-Part Test."
