Volunteer Literacy Program
Each year in Washington state, trained volunteers help thousands of adult learners with reading, writing, math and English language skills.
Trained Volunteer Literacy Program (VLP) volunteers lead classrooms, as well as individual and small group instruction at community and technical colleges, multiservice community agencies and independent literacy councils.
Volunteer Literacy Program Principles
Developed by and for volunteer adult literacy programs in Washington, the volunteer literacy principles aim to promote quality standards for volunteer adult literacy programs. The principles outline best practices, program quality indicators, self-assessment tools for program staff and advisory boards, and technical assistance and program review guidance for state staff.
