The Legislature established the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) to recognize and honor students who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding performance in their occupational training programs.

Colleges were required  to waive tuition (operating and building fees) and services and activities fees for any recipients of the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence who received their awards prior to June 20, 1994.

Language pertaining to waivers was eliminated from statute in 2015. Instead of waivers, recipients of the Award are eligible to receive a grant from the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board.
